Hill Walks with Stunning Views

Three of the best viewpoint walks in the area — all within 30 minutes of the hotel and suitable for most fitness levels.

Kinnoull Hill cliff viewpoint overlooking the River Tay near Perth

12 miles · Perth

Kinnoull Hill

Our number one recommendation for walkers staying at the hotel. Kinnoull Hill rises above Perth and offers dramatic cliff-edge viewpoints overlooking the River Tay — views that rival anything in the Highlands. The Kinnoull Hill Tower perched on the cliff edge is an unforgettable sight.

Moderate 3 miles circular 1.5–2 hours
Dundee Law summit viewpoint with panoramic views

9 miles · Dundee

Dundee Law

The volcanic plug at the heart of Dundee offers a short, sharp climb rewarded with 360-degree panoramic views across the city, the River Tay, Fife and the distant Highlands. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Cairngorms. A perfect quick walk combined with a visit to the V&A or waterfront.

Easy–Moderate 1 mile return 30–45 minutes
Norman's Law summit in Fife with views across the Tay Estuary

15 miles · North Fife

Norman's Law

A hidden gem across the Tay in North Fife. This Iron Age hillfort summit offers spectacular views over both the Tay and Forth estuaries and across to the Highlands. A moderately steep ascent through farmland and heather, but well worth the effort for one of the finest viewpoints in the region.

Moderate 3.5 miles circular 2–2.5 hours

Riverside & Woodland Walks

Easier walks perfect for a relaxing morning or afternoon — ideal for families and those seeking a gentler pace.

River Tay Walks — Perth

12 miles · Easy · 1–3 miles · 30 mins–1.5 hours

Perth's riverside paths follow the banks of the majestic River Tay — Scotland's longest river — through the beautiful North and South Inch parklands. Flat, well-maintained paths make this ideal for all ages and abilities. Watch for salmon leaping in summer and the graceful mute swans that call the Tay home year-round.

The Hermitage — Dunkeld

35 mins drive · Easy–Moderate · 1.5 miles circular · 45 mins

One of Scotland's most magical short walks. Follow the well-made path through a grove of towering Douglas firs — some of the tallest trees in Britain — to Ossian's Hall, a folly perched above the thundering Black Linn Falls on the River Braan. Atmospheric at any time of year, but especially stunning in autumn colour. See our Cairngorms guide for more on this area.

Carse of Gowrie — From the Hotel

From the door · Easy · 2–5 miles · 1–2 hours

Step straight out of The Inchture Hotel and explore the peaceful lanes, farm tracks and footpaths of the Carse of Gowrie — the fertile floodplain between Dundee and Perth. This is gentle, flat walking through beautiful farmland with views to the Sidlaw Hills. Perfect for an early morning stroll or evening wander before dinner.

Broughty Ferry Coastal Walk

12 miles · Easy · 2–4 miles · 1–2 hours

The seaside suburb of Broughty Ferry on the eastern edge of Dundee offers lovely coastal walking along the Tay estuary. Start at Broughty Castle, follow the esplanade past sandy beaches and continue towards Monifieth. Flat and accessible, with plenty of cafés and ice cream shops for well-deserved stops.

Long-Distance Trails

For more serious walkers, Perthshire is home to some of Scotland's finest long-distance trails. Walk a section as a day trip from the hotel.

The Cateran Trail

64 miles · 5 days · Challenging

Scotland's premier circular long-distance walking trail loops through the rolling glens of Highland Perthshire from Blairgowrie through Glenshee and Glen Isla. Named after the Highland cattle raiders, the trail passes through some of the most beautiful and unspoilt countryside in Scotland.

Day walk option: Walk the Blairgowrie to Kirkmichael section (15 miles) or shorter circular routes from Blairgowrie — around 30 minutes' drive from the hotel.

The Rob Roy Way

79 miles · 7 days · Moderate–Challenging

Following the footsteps of Scotland's most famous outlaw, this trail runs from Drymen to Pitlochry through the heart of Highland Perthshire. The route passes through Aberfeldy, Loch Tay and some of the most dramatic glen scenery in Scotland.

Day walk option: The section from Aberfeldy to Grandtully (8 miles) makes an excellent day walk through riverside woodland — around 50 minutes' drive from the hotel.

Fife Coastal Path

117 miles · 9 days · Easy–Moderate

One of Scotland's Great Trails, the Fife Coastal Path follows the entire Fife coastline. The section between St Andrews and Crail (10 miles) is outstanding — clifftop paths, sea views, wildlife and the charming fishing villages of the East Neuk. See our Fife Coast guide.

Day walk option: St Andrews to Anstruther (10 miles) — take the bus back. Around 35 minutes' drive to the start.

Before You Set Off

Footwear: For hill walks like Kinnoull Hill and Norman's Law, walking boots with good ankle support are recommended. Riverside and woodland walks can usually be managed in sturdy trainers, though paths can be muddy after rain.

Weather: Scottish weather is famously changeable. Layered clothing and a waterproof jacket are essential, even on days that look promising. Conditions can change quickly, especially on higher ground.

Packed lunches: We're happy to prepare packed lunches at the hotel if you let us know the evening before — perfect for a full day on the trails.

Ask us: Our team at The Inchture Hotel are local and love walking themselves. We're always delighted to recommend routes, advise on conditions and help you plan your walking days. Just ask at reception.
