Glamis Castle
The legendary castle of Shakespeare and the Queen Mother — just 20 miles away
A Castle Steeped in Legend
Glamis Castle is one of Scotland's most iconic and atmospheric castles — a place where history, legend and royal connections intertwine across more than 600 years. The childhood home of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and the birthplace of Princess Margaret, Glamis has been the seat of the Lyon family since the 14th century and remains their family home today.
Shakespeare set his famous tragedy Macbeth at Glamis, and the castle is steeped in legends of ghostly apparitions, secret rooms and ancient curses. Whether you're drawn by history, architecture, beautiful gardens or simply the thrill of exploring one of Scotland's most magnificent buildings, Glamis Castle is an unforgettable experience.
Just 20 miles from The Inchture Hotel — around 30 minutes by car — Glamis Castle makes a wonderful day trip. Stay with us and return to a warm welcome, a fine dinner and a dram by the fire at the end of the day.

The Macbeth Connection
Shakespeare's Macbeth — perhaps the most famous play in the English language — is set at Glamis Castle. In the play, Macbeth is Thane of Glamis before becoming King of Scotland through treachery and murder. While the real Macbeth (who lived in the 11th century) may have had little connection to Glamis, Shakespeare's enduring association has made the castle a place of literary pilgrimage.
The atmosphere at Glamis certainly lives up to its dramatic reputation. With its fairy-tale turrets, ancient walls and centuries of legends — including tales of a secret room and a spectral figure known as the Grey Lady — it's easy to see why Shakespeare chose Glamis as the backdrop for his dark masterpiece.
For theatre lovers, outdoor performances of Macbeth and other Shakespeare plays are occasionally staged in the castle grounds during the summer months — a truly magical experience.
